mountain biking at Cacapon

Spring has sprung!  I love spring: the warmer weather, the peeper frogs, and especially the longer daylight.  Not only do the days get longer, but the start of Daylight Savings Time always gives my soul a boost.  Having the extra hour of daylight in the evening is so, so nice.  Rides and other activities after work become feasible again.  Of course, many people find the first day  or tow after the time change, whether the spring or the fall change, a little rough.  In fact, from my informal surveying, pretty much everyone detests having time changes.  However, there is difference of opinion whether it’s better to stay on Standard Time or Daylight Savings Time.  Personally, I am a huge fan of the idea of staying on Daylight Savings Time if we were to stay on one.  I much prefer the extra light in the evening.  I know many say that having DST in the winter would mean kids in the dark at the bus stop, but my kid was in the dark at the bus stop with ST, anyway.  But, we probably won’t switch to one full time, anyway.  They tried going to DST only back in the 70s, and it only lasted a year or something before we went back to switching.  Did you know the original idea of changing times would have had us changing the clocks 32 times per year?  Sometimes as little as 5 minutes?  Yeah, that would have been really crazy!  So they decided on just twice a year, an hour.  It’s fine.

Nevertheless, I get an extra bounce in my step the first day of DST.  I can ride outside without 10 extra pounds of clothes, lol.  I can bask in warm sunshine.  I can get out on the river.  I can do stuff around the outside of the house after work.  I love spring!

And we are looking to have a very nice spring this year!  I always expect winter to try to make one last huzzah at the end of March, but it doesn’t look like it is going to this year.  So getting out on the mountain bike or road bike has been nice, especially since the winter was pretty cold and kept me riding indoors on the trainer for much of it.

So, now that the days are longer and warmer, dust off your bike, bring it in for a tune, and get out and enjoy spring!
